We build in-house, from frame shop to shipping.
E and J Furniture builds upholstered furniture for brands to sell under their own names. Our factory is in Carson, in Los Angeles County. This page covers what each department does, what to put in a program brief and the four steps that follow.
No minimum order: a program can start at a single piece. Lead time is 4–8 weeks, plus freight. Payment terms: 50% deposit at order, balance due before shipping.

01Frame Shop
Frames are cut and joined in our own frame shop.
Each frame is built to the drawing you approve, and reorders are built to the same approved drawing. Wood and metal bases are part of the range. Name the base you want on the approved drawing.

02Cut & Sew, Foam
Covers are patterned, cut and sewn in our cut-and-sew department and fitted over foam from our foam department.
We upholster in fabric and leather, including tufting, welts, channels and buttoning. The foams and fills we use meet California TB 117-2013. Before production we work out with you the yardage (how much fabric each piece uses), the pattern repeat (how a motif lines up across a piece) and whether to railroad the fabric (run it sideways so a long piece needs no seams).

03Finishing
Wood finishes are applied in our own finishing department.
We finish in birch, cherry, maple, oak, walnut and alder, plus painted and artisanal finishes. Send a physical sample of a color or texture and we'll finish to it for your approval. Production is checked against the approved sample.

04Shipping
Our shipping department consolidates freight to all 50 states and internationally.
Pieces are blanket-wrapped or cartoned to suit the destination, and packing is planned as part of the build. Tell us in your brief where the program ships.
Program types: Start from your design or our library, and sell it under your name.
- Private label
- The arrangement behind every program: you sell each piece under your own brand.
- How private label works
- OEM to your drawings
- OEM manufacturing means we build to your design, sent as drawings, a physical piece or a tech pack (the drawings, dimensions, materials and hardware a factory builds from).
- How OEM works
- Library adaptation
- Start from one of our 162 production silhouettes and have it re-scaled, re-specced and re-covered, or ask about ODM, where we develop the design with you. Ownership of the resulting drawings, and any exclusivity, are set out in your program agreement.
- Read the OEM vs ODM guide
- Reorders
- A reorder is a later production run of an existing program, built to the same approved sample and specification.
- Read the reorders guide
What a quote needs: A quote needs six things from your brief.
You don't need all six to send a brief. Send what you have, and we'll ask about anything missing before we quote.
Every program is quoted; nothing is priced publicly. Size and construction, materials and finish, quantity, how often you reorder and packaging set the unit price, while freight is priced separately. The guide to what sets the price of a private-label upholstered piece explains each factor.
- 01
Drawings, or something to draw from
A tech pack or CAD drawings give us the most to quote from. A dimensioned sketch, a photograph or a tearsheet (a catalog or magazine page showing the piece) also works: we'll draw it up and send the drawing for your approval.
- 02
Dimensions that matter to you
Tell us which measurements are fixed and which are ours to resolve. Seat height and depth usually matter more to your customers than overall width.
- 03
Where the pieces are going and how they'll be used
The intended use decides how the frame, the seat deck (the platform and springs under the cushion) and the foam are specified. A piece for occasional use is built differently from one used all day.
- 04
Quantity, and whether it reorders
A one-time run and a program that reorders on a schedule are priced and scheduled differently. Give a first quantity and, if you know it, how often you expect to reorder.
- 05
Your fabric or leather, or what to source
Tell us whether you plan to supply the fabric or leather (by arrangement) or want us to source it. For sourcing, describe the hand (how the fabric feels), the performance you need and your budget.
- 06
The documentation your specification requires
If your specification calls for flammability or material documentation, say so in the brief and we'll confirm what we can provide for that program.
How a program runs, step by step: A program runs in four steps, from brief to freight.
- 01
Send your brief
Tell us what you want built, how many and where it ships.
- You
- Send the six things a quote needs, or as many as you have. Ask for an NDA before you send drawings.
- We
- Ask about anything missing, and draw the piece up if there's no tech pack.
- 02
Quote and first sample
Once you approve the drawing and the quote, we build a sample to the drawing.
- You
- Approve the drawing and the quote. Your program agreement names who owns the drawings, both the ones you send and any we develop with you.
- We
- Flag anything that would be hard to build consistently before sending the quote.
- 03
Approve the sample
Production is checked against the sample you approve.
- You
- Review the sample and sign it off, or tell us what to change for another sample round.
- We
- Write a component-level specification (frame, seat deck, foam, covering and hardware) from the approved sample.
- 04
Production and freight
Built in Los Angeles County in 4–8 weeks, plus freight, then consolidated and shipped.
- You
- Place the order on our payment terms (50% deposit at order, balance due before shipping), then receive consolidated freight anywhere in the 50 states or internationally. Approve any material substitution before it's used.
- We
- Build the run, check it against the approved sample, pack it for the destination and build reorders to the same specification.
Questions
These answers cover the minimum order, lead time, payment terms and materials.
01Do you have a minimum order quantity?
No. A program can start at a single piece, and there is no upper limit. Every program is quoted, and the guide to how furniture MOQs work explains what brings the unit price down.
02What is your lead time?
Lead time is 4 to 8 weeks, plus freight from Los Angeles County to wherever the program ships.
03What are your payment terms?
Payment terms: 50% deposit at order, balance due before shipping.
04Do your foams meet California TB 117-2013?
Yes. The foams and fills we use meet California TB 117-2013, the flammability standard most commercial specifications name. Say in your brief what documentation your specification needs, and we'll confirm what we can supply for that program.
05Can you work with fabric or leather we supply (COM/COL)?
By arrangement. Customer's own material (COM) and customer's own leather (COL) are agreed program by program: say in your brief what you plan to supply, and we'll confirm the terms for that program. Supplied material is cut in our own cut-and-sew department, and the yardage, pattern repeat and railroading are worked out with you before production.
06Do you build from our drawings, or from your own designs?
Either. We build to your own drawings or tech pack, or start from our library of 162 production silhouettes, which can be re-scaled, re-specced and re-covered for your program. Any exclusivity is set out in your program agreement.
07Which wood finishes do you run in-house?
Birch, cherry, maple, oak, walnut and alder, plus painted and artisanal finishes, all applied in our own finishing department. The finishes page shows them with our standard stains, metal finishes, nailheads and decorative stitching.
08Can we get finish samples?
Yes. Samples are mailed free: tick the finishes you want on the finishes page and request them, or name them in your program brief with an address to send them to. For a finish of your own, send us a color or texture sample and we'll finish to it for your approval.
09Will you put your name on our furniture?
No. Our name does not appear on the product or its packaging, and the label, tags and cartons carry your brand. The page on private-label furniture manufacturing explains how the arrangement works.
10Do you build on both wood and metal bases?
Yes. Wood and metal bases are part of the range. Name the base on the drawing you approve, so it's settled before the sample is built.
11How do you keep reorders consistent with the approved sample?
Each reorder is built to the same approved sample and component-level specification as the first production run. Wood, hides and dye lots (batches of fabric dyed together) vary naturally, so tolerances are set out in your program agreement. The guide to keeping a program consistent across reorders also covers planning for dye lots.
12What happens if production doesn't match the approved sample?
Production is checked against the approved sample. Tolerances, and the remedies for a piece that falls outside them, are set out in your program agreement. If a material has to change, we ask you before we use a substitute.
13What do you need to quote a program?
Six things: drawings or a piece to draw from, the fixed dimensions, the intended use, the quantity and whether it reorders, your fabric or leather and any documentation your specification requires. You don't need all six to send a brief; we'll ask about what's missing before we quote. The guide to what sets the price of a private-label upholstered piece explains what moves the unit price.
14Can a new brand or design house launch its own line with you?
Yes. With no minimum order, a first line can start at a single piece, built to your drawings or adapted from our library, whether the brand sells online, in its own stores or through retailers.
Downloads: Forward our capabilities internally, or a tearsheet for each silhouette.
Capability sheet
One page to forward internally: the departments, what a quote needs, our terms and the factory's address.
Line card
All 162 library silhouettes by family, each with its reference number and nominal dimensions.
Tearsheets
A one-page PDF for each silhouette, with its photographs, reference number, nominal dimensions and terms.
Next step
Send a program brief to start your quote.
Include drawings or a photograph (or a library silhouette's name and reference number), with quantities and where the program ships. Our quotes are priced to compete on landed cost (the unit price plus freight, duty and the other costs of getting a piece to your warehouse), which the page on domestic furniture manufacturing compares with building overseas.
Only your name and email are required. We reply by email with questions, or with a quote if the brief has enough to price.
